When will the latest employment data come out and what do we expect?
NZ’s third quarter labour market data is released on Wednesday 2nd November. A rise in the unemployment rate is expected and will better reflect the fallout from lockdown. However, we do not expect the exceptionally high estimates originally provided by financial and government organisations to come through – we expect unemployment rate of 5-6%.
With rising unemployment, why is it not always easier to find the perfect candidate?
While unemployment has risen and this does mean there are more candidates in the market overall – this does not mean that more well-suited, high performing candidates are available and engaged for all opportunities. There are sectors & departments benefiting more than others by the current conditions. In some cases, we note tightened engaged talent pools – specifically areas where specialised skills and robust experiences are required.
What does the next year look like?
We have noted calmness amongst candidates this year, as many have continued exploring their next career move forward, especially as the nation dropped out of the original lockdown. Job Adverts (as an indication of activity) have largely recovered from the Q2 dive but are still around 10% below pre pandemic averages, at a total level. However, various sectors have made a full recovery and are well placed 2021 (Food, Pharmaceutical, Manufacturing etc.).
Last bulletin, we touched on the common theme amongst most new positions we have placed recently or are working on currently: their purpose is to accelerate improvement and growth. This month we welcome Austin Lacey, our new Operations Manager, to the Scitex team. This is a newly created position which will further strengthen our operation, quality of service while deepening our expertise to the Engineering fields. Before joining Scitex, Austin had a career which spanned Ireland, the UK and Europe working in senior managerial roles in various engineering and operational sectors within the Pharmaceutical, Medical Device, Civil Engineering and Hospitality sector. He brings over 10 years of managerial experience and a proven track record within complex engineering and business organisations. In Austin’s previous role his main responsibility was the Management of Engineering Services for Dolmen Engineering. These teams were tasked with the delivery of turnkey multimillion-euro projects within highly regulated environments and services across Ireland / UK and Europe.
