We’re excited to be on the search for a qualified Head Saw Doctor to join a motivated engineering team based out of Milburn, in the stunning region of Otago, New Zealand, for our client, a renowned New Zealand primary industries producer. 

This is an exciting opportunity where you will take full responsibility for the efficient day-to-day saw doctoring operations, ensuring optimal saw performance while successfully leading and mentoring a dedicated team. About the Role:
Reporting to the Engineering Co-ordinator, as the Head Saw Doctor, you will lead the Saw Shop team, ensuring saws are repaired, sharpened, and maintained to the highest standards. Your expertise will be essential in optimizing saw performance, overseeing maintenance schedules, and upholding health and safety practices.

Hours: Monday to  Friday, rotating shifts:

  • 5.30am to 2.00pm
  • 7.30am to 4.00pm

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage daily saw doctoring operations and maintenance.
  • Ensure saws meet high-performance and quality standards.
  • Lead, train, and develop a team of two saw doctors.
  • Plan and execute preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to optimize saw performance.
  • Uphold health, safety, and environmental compliance.
  • Manage and maintain SAP system records in an automated mill environment.

Key Requirements:

  • Certificate in Solid Wood Manufacturing and a Level 4 Trade Certificate in Saw Doctoring or equivalent international qualification.
  • Minimum 5 years’ proven experience as a tradesman in saw doctoring and sawmill operations and/or service shop with an expertise in band saws and circular saws.
  • Team management experience is advantageous.
  • You will bring a strong focus on saw doctoring techniques to ensure sawmill reliability, along with a commitment to health and safety best practices.
  • Your mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, and sound judgment will enable you to make quick decisions and adapt to changing priorities.
  • As a proactive leader with excellent interpersonal skills, you will effectively plan, multitask, and meet deadlines while working independently with a strong work ethic.
  • SAP experience and/or working with automation and technology in a mill environment.
