Head of Health, Safety & Wellbeing

  • Lead safety strategy across a major regional infrastructure recovery programme
  • 11 month contract – build team culture in a progressive alliance model
  • Based in Gisborne, or elsewhere in NZ (and travel in on a regular basis)

Lead Health, Safety & Wellbeing for a High-Impact Infrastructure Programme

Following the devastating impacts of Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023, a major infrastructure recovery programme is underway to restore and improve transport networks across Te Tairāwhiti (Gisborne) and Te Matau-a-Māui (Hawke’s Bay). This multi-organisation alliance is working in close partnership with local contractors and communities to deliver significant recovery and resilience projects across the region’s road and rail corridors.

We are seeking a proven Health, Safety & Wellbeing leader to step into a pivotal role as Head of Health, Safety & Wellbeing. Reporting to the Project Director and sitting on the Alliance Leadership Team, this role will provide strategic and visible safety leadership across all facets of the programme.

You’ll be instrumental in shaping a culture of care, compliance, and operational excellence—developing and embedding systems and initiatives that protect people and enhance performance. It’s a rare opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the long-term future of regional infrastructure, while further growing your leadership capabilities in a collaborative alliance environment.

What we’re looking for:

  • A formal qualification in Health & Safety or equivalent experience in a relevant field.
  • Extensive background in infrastructure, construction, or major projects—ideally in high-risk environments.
  • Proven experience (5+ years) in a senior HSW leadership role, preferably within an alliance or similar large-scale delivery environment.
  • Strong understanding of risk management frameworks, regulatory requirements, and best practice safety systems.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with the ability to influence across multiple stakeholders.
  • A track record of building high-performing teams that drive results and foster a proactive safety culture.
  • Availability to be based in, or regularly travel to, Gisborne.

This is a fixed-term role with the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the region and the people who live and work there.

Why Relocate to Gisborne?
We’re looking for someone who’s ready for a lifestyle shift – without compromising on the scale and impact of their work. In Gisborne, you’ll find:

  • Affordable living and less time in traffic
  • Stunning beaches, surf, and a relaxed pace of life
  • A close-knit community and rich cultural heritage
  • Meaningful work delivering a legacy for future generations
