Diesel Mechanic

We are looking for a qualified and experienced Diesel Mechanic to join a leading NZ company, playing a key role in maintaining the reliability and safety of a diverse fleet that supports essential public services.

About the Role:
Our client, a New Zealand leader in environmental waste and recycling services based in Hornby, Christchurch manages and maintains a large and varied trucking fleet (12-25 tonne vehicles), ensuring critical public services remain operational. These specialised vehicles are equipped with lifters, hooks, and gantries, requiring hydraulic expertise and ideally some electrical knowledge.
Reporting to the Workshop Supervisor, you will be responsible for keeping fleet vehicles roadworthy and compliant with all safety and regulatory standards.
This role is a 45-hour work week, Monday to Thursday from 3:00 pm to 1:30 am and Friday from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct routine servicing and inspections, diagnose faults, and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
  • Ensure all vehicles meet regulatory requirements and pass safety inspections.
  • Requisition parts, manage job processing in CMMS, and maintain accurate records.
  • Support team members, provide technical advice, and help drive the transition to clean fuels.
  • Conduct daily inspections of workshop tools and equipment to verify functionality and inventory accuracy.

Key Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a qualified Diesel Mechanic in a heavy industry vehicle context.
  • Trade qualification in Heavy Automotive Engineering – Level 4 or equivalent.
  • Strong hydraulic & automotive electric systems diagnostic and problem-solving abilities.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and compliance standards for vehicle maintenance.
  • Proficiency in welding and fabrication techniques.
  • Class 4 driver’s license.
  • Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Outstanding communication skills to liaise with team members and management.
  • Commitment to environmental sustainability and waste management best practices.
