Impressively, and for many surprisingly, unemployment dropped from 5.3% to 4.9% in the December 2020 quarter – a level considered reasonably normal, even outside of a pandemic. Key drivers were the construction industry who employed an extra +13,200 staff in the quarter alone, while Manufacturing also contributed strongly. With Canada currently at 8.8%, the US 6.7%, Australia at 6.6% – and considering the NZ average unemployment rate over the last 15 years is 5.95% – we can feel good about our nation’s progress. It’s clear that the release of Pfizer/BioNTech’s vaccine data in November, far above expectations, underpinned by the governments fiscal support, has resulted in a stronger sentiment amongst many businesses outlook to 2021.
